14.2 Supplement text with graphic or auditory presentations

In a nutshell, use pictures, sound and text to complement each other and help comprehension. Provide text equivalents.

The W3C gives a few examples of multi-media that support text:

  • A chart of complex data, such as sales figures of a business for the past financial year
  • A translation of the text into a Sign Language movie clip. Sign Language is a very different language to spoken languages and some people who use Sign Language can’t read
  • Pre-recorded music, spoken language, or sound effects may also help non-readers
