Using selectors

There are some other things that you might need to know about selectors in style sheets. Some of these are new at CSS2 and the browsers might not support them or don't quite get it right.

You can:

• Use the class attribute as a selector. Use classes to create style variations for a single HTML tag. You could use this a lot
• Use the id attribute as a selector. Use Ids to change the style for a specific instance of a tag
• Group styles together
• Nest selectors. This means you can apply a style to instances of one selector inside of another (such as bold text inside a paragraph tag)
• Use adjacent selectors. This allows you to apply a style to a tag that immediately follows another tag
• Use child selectors. This allows you to apply a style to any tag that is a direct child of the tag
• Use universal selectors. This allows you to apply a style to a range of tags
• Match attributes and values. This allows you to apply a style to tags with properties and values that match the ones in the style rule
• Use pseudo-classes and elements as selectors
• Use the <div> tag to define styles. The <div> tag allows you to change the appearance of a section on a page
• Using the <span> tag to set a style. The <span> tag allows you change styles within a sentence or within a word. You can also use it to create special effects
