How do I organise the site?

A simple, clear structure will help users navigate easily; this should increase your site's appeal. The good thing about a hierarchical structure is that people understand it. Start at the top with general information and move down to more specific information. The hierarchy is very important for big sites; it is like a big table of contents.

Some guidelines:

  • Categories in the hierarchy should be pretty much self-contained. Not too many cross references to muddy the waters
  • Think about the number of options at each level and the number of levels. Don't make users click too many times to get to the information they want and don't give them too many choices (it will only confuse them)
