A useability check list

I can't remember where I saw all of this but still:

  • You only have about eight seconds to load your page before people leave. This is particularly true of the home page. If people leave, they don't come back
  • Your home page should show you up in a distinctive light. It is all that branding stuff
  • Keep the user in mind when you design the site and make it easy to use
  • Don't let people get lost
  • Content should be content. Clever Javascripts and animated gifs are not a substitute for worthwhile, useful content
  • Write well. Determine a house style and stick to it. Be consistent
  • Give a way for people to make suggestions or ask for information. Make it easy to contact you; through the web site and by phone, fax or even the normal mail
  • Give the people what they want. Not what you want to give them
